Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for teachers, musicians, and partners.

What is Cadance?

Cadance is a dance class music app built to keep classes moving with fast access, class‑friendly controls, and reliable playback. It's the sequel to BarreNotes.

How can I try Cadance?

Download on the App Store: Cadance. Cadance is free to download and includes a Free tier (Class Planning mode) with unlimited browsing, playlist editing, and 15-second track previews. You'll also receive 14 free Day Passes to try full playback.

How does Cadance pricing work?

Cadance uses a Day Pass model combined with optional subscriptions. New users get 14 free Day Passes on install. One Day Pass = one full day of unrestricted access to every feature. Day Passes never expire. You can also subscribe for unlimited ongoing access: Spark ($4.99/month), Artist ($12.99/month), or Patron ($24.99/month). Pay only for the days you teach.

What can I do with Cadance for free?

The Free tier (also called Class Planning mode) includes unlimited browsing of Apple Music, all 33 curated Cadance Resources playlists, playlist creation and editing, Apple Music playlist import, Favorites, search and discovery, and 15-second previews of any track. Sustained playback past 15 seconds requires a Day Pass or subscription.

What happens when I play a track past 15 seconds?

A banner appears telling you a Day Pass will activate in 10 seconds. You can cancel if you're just sampling music, or let it activate to unlock the full teaching day. Once activated, you have unrestricted access until midnight local time — no further prompts, no interruptions during class.

Do Day Passes expire?

No. Day Passes never expire. They stay in your account until you activate them. Buy a 20-pack once, use them whenever you teach over the next several months.

Do Day Passes sync between my iPhone and iPad?

Yes, via iCloud. Sign into the same iCloud account on both devices and your balance, activation status, and purchase history stay in sync automatically.

What's in the curated Cadance Resources playlists?

33 pre-installed playlists including Hip-Hop Kids and Hip-Hop Teens, six Artist Samplers from the Cadance music creator community, five Apple Music partner playlists, and the Extraordinary Groups collection — purpose-built playlists for Parkinson's, Alzheimer's & Dementia, Autism Spectrum, Heart Health, MS & Stroke recovery, and Proactive Aging programs.

Which subscription tier is right for me?

If you teach occasionally, Day Passes alone are usually cheapest. If you teach several days a week with your own music library, Spark ($4.99/month) is the best value. If you use Apple Music tracks downloaded to your device, choose Artist ($12.99/month). If you stream from the full Apple Music catalog in class, choose Patron ($24.99/month).

Can I subscribe AND buy Day Passes?

Yes. A Day Pass temporarily unlocks Patron-tier access regardless of your current subscription. For example, a Spark subscriber can buy a Day Pass to access Apple Music streaming for a one-off workshop without upgrading their subscription.

What if I run out of Day Passes mid-class?

That won't happen. Once a Day Pass activates, you have unrestricted access until midnight. Cadance will never interrupt a class. The only check happens at the 15-second mark on your first sustained track of the day — well before any class begins.

What professional features does Cadance offer?

Cadance provides pro tempo control (-50% to +100%), repeats (up to 4), class timers, and a class-friendly interface designed for fast teaching workflows. Spark+ adds advanced tools like Delay Start, Metronome, local file import, and Apple Watch support. Artist and Patron add Apple Music subscription features.

Do I need an Apple Music subscription?

No. Cadance works great with the music in your device library. If you have an Apple Music subscription, Artist and Patron tiers unlock additional Apple Music capabilities (downloaded tracks and streaming, respectively).

Does Cadance support tempo change and repeats?

Yes. Tempo control and repeats are core to Cadance. Deeper guides are here: How To.

Can I import my own music?

Yes, this is a big improvement over BarreNotes! We make it easy to push your music to Cadance via AirDrop or pull it from the cloud or a shared drive. See How To for Cadance features guide.

Is Cadance available on Android?

Not currently. Cadance 4 is a fully native iOS/iPadOS app, optimized for Apple's audio, MusicKit, and Apple Watch integration. We're focused on delivering the best possible experience on Apple devices. Android support is not on the near-term roadmap.

What devices does Cadance support?

iPhone and iPad running iOS/iPadOS 17 or later. Apple Watch companion support with enhanced remote control in v4. Works with Bluetooth remotes for presentation-style class control from anywhere in the studio.

How do I get started?

Download Cadance from the App Store. You'll receive 14 free Day Passes. Explore the curated playlists, import your Apple Music library, and activate your first pass when you're ready to teach a real class.

I was a subscriber before v4 — does anything change for me?

Your subscription continues uninterrupted with no price change. You have unrestricted access as before. The Day Pass system is an additional option for free users; existing subscribers don't need Day Passes.

How do I support the developer?

Buying Day Passes, subscribing to any tier, or simply leaving a review on the App Store all help enormously. Cadance is built by a small team focused on real teaching workflows.

Definition of cadence

Cadence refers to a rhythmic sequence or flow of sounds in language, music, or activity. It can describe the beat or measure of rhythmical motion, such as in music or military chants.

Musical cadence

In music, a cadence marks the end of a phrase, creating a sense of resolution.

  • Authentic cadence: a strong resolution, typically moving from a dominant chord (V) to the tonic (I).
  • Half cadence: ends on a dominant chord, creating an incomplete feeling.
  • Plagal cadence: moves from the subdominant (IV) to the tonic (I), often called the "Amen cadence."
  • Deceptive cadence: leads you to expect a resolution that does not occur.
Cadence in language

In speech, cadence supports clarity and expression — the rise, fall, and timing that make phrases land.

Military cadence

In marching, cadence refers to rhythmic chants that help maintain pace and unity of movement.

Exercise cadence

Cadence can also refer to the rhythm or tempo at which a physical exercise is performed. In activities like running, cycling, or weightlifting, cadence is often measured in beats per minute (BPM), repetitions per minute (RPM), or steps per minute (SPM). Understanding cadence helps optimize performance, enhance endurance, and reduce injury risk.

Why cadence matters for dance classes

Cadence helps define structure and emotional impact in music, improves flow in language, and supports synchronization in movement. In class, that translates into clean starts, consistent tempo, and less interruption.
